The red trail shows how far Mercury gets from the sun, while the grey trail marks the orbit of Venus. January 26 brings a slender crescent moon near Mercury in the early evening. Venus stands higher, outshining everything else in the sky. By the next night, the moon has grown fatter and moved beneath Venus.
